Actually now that I'm thinking about it (and potentially have the money) can Sting or someone else suggest a good mobo + CPU combo for around $300?

i7 2550K + some sort of H61 chipset motherboard (such as Intel DH61SA) should come out to about $290-300, and is pretty close to the best you can get, if games are what you care about. You'd need DDR3-1033 or DDR3-1333 memory, dunno what you have now.

Decided to get a SSD instead now to upgrade my 7 year old SATA I drive. Newegg has a 240GB SSD with SATA III for $230 ( link) and it comes with a free copy of Mass Effect 3. It should be a huge speed increase.
